What Our Schedule Looks Like Right Now
Working from home isn’t new to us, so when quarantine hit we were like "we got this". But add in the unknowns of our world: 3 kids home full time without a sitter, homeschooling, and the stress of what will happen to our businesses and it was a crazy first couple of weeks figuring out the new normal.
It felt different and we didn't have our usual outlets like going to the gym or barre class or even being able to go on a date without the kids in tow. And having London home full time, trying not to freak out about now adding homeschool to our to-do list, it was a bit nutty, to say the least.
Noah and I are both organized and have similar morning routines. Before quarantine, we had a loose plan of how each day would look. And we had the help of our incredible sitter 3-4 days a week to ensure we could get some work done kid-free with limited interruptions.
But without our sitter, we had to quickly pivot and come up with a plan that would allow both of us to work plus home school London.
Side note on the homeschooling part: I was stressing hard about homeschooling for the first few weeks and then decided enough was enough. London reads A LOT and does writing and math daily. And that's it.
She plays, creates, builds, explores, all day long. To me, that's the best type of school. So I stopped fretting about it all which was good because it was beginning to create a lot of unneeded anxiety.
Now, back to our schedule.
We slowly but surely got in a groove and mapped out an hour-by-hour schedule to keep us organized.
It was the best thing for us because we knew what to expect, who was working when, and what our day looked like.
What our daily schedule looks like
5-5:30 am wake up
5:30-7 am morning routine
7-9 am Noah works// Kara workouts, makes breakfast, works some while kids are playing
9-10:30 am Kara works // Noah workouts & does math with London
10:30-11 am Family walk
11-12 pm Noah works
12-12:45 pm Family lunch
12-2 pm Noah works
2-3:30 pm Kara works
3:30-5:30 pm Noah works
We stay flexible
Although we have it all planned out we still have to be flexible. If one of us has a meeting that needs to be scheduled outside of our scheduled work time we just communicate that.
And this doesn't always go perfectly – we use it more as a guide but we do try to stay pretty close to the schedule. It’s helped us both know what the expectations are for the day and prevents miscommunication or confusion about who’s working when.
Weekends
Weekends are sacred to me. Our weekdays are packed full and a bit chaotic working from home with three kids while both Noah and I are running our own businesses. So I do try to keep weekends low key and include some sort of downtime for myself.
I still move my body on the weekends and try to wake up early (around 6 am) to get in my morning routine. I like getting a head start on my day before the kids wake up and the day attacks.
Routine is my friend and even on the weekends I like to stick to my habits.
Your schedule
I hope you’re finding a good groove for you and your family but if you’re struggling with working from home or maintaining your habits I encourage you to plan the day out hourly. Use our schedule as a guide and adjust it to fit you and your family’s needs.
